Pipe Berth Storage area.
Not sure what else to call it. I opted to use common stainless steel tubing found more commonly where a mariner travels, as well as end fittings and other parts equally available.
The Sunbrella dark green cloth slips over a support tube along the interior hull and protects the woodwork.
I like to do things myself and kind of demand that anything aboard my boat must be repairable by me. This "Pipe Berth" idea, has lent itself to several projects aboard Memory Rose.
On the aft bulkhead: High up/light grey are the control boxes for the electric Andersen primary winches. Below that are the Outback MX-60 Solar Controller and circuit breaker box.
In this case, in our aft master state room, the extra berth on the port side of the cabin was designed as a combo nav station seat and single berth. We never sleep there and the Nav Station never had a backrest.
In opting to contain the many items that often found their way to the aft end of this berth and make the storage area actually larger and well organized, I sat many an hour just looking at the area. Finally the ideas evolved to the point that paper and pencil along with tape measure were needed.
The end result works well.
We now have a storage area that holds our cruising spinnaker in the aft end/bottom of pile. Atop that are extra lines of varying size/for emergency and just plain old storage! We have finally run out of room for cruising gear. Atop those lines is some smaller, mostly soft items down to the required supply of ball caps and such. Forward of the spinnaker, is my large tupperware tool tub/box. It's not what some guys would desire, but it works for me. The most common tools that I might and usually need are in that tub. I know where they are and if necessary, approximately how deep :) Over this storage bin, I installed a 12vdc double tube flourescent light. It's easy to access the on/off button from the cockpit or inside the aft cabin.
The bar along the top of this bin is often used to hang a piece of clothing or foul weather gear or just act as a handhold in a seaway.
Higher up, attached to the overhead near the side deck, is another bent s.s.tube used for hanging clothes, wetsuit, foul weather gear, jackets, etc.
The forward end of the Pipe Berth Storage Bin acts as backrest for the occupant of the Nav Station. I had the original berth cushion drastically shortened to be only large enough for the nav seat area. Then had a 2 piece back rest cushion made for sitting straight towards the station or resting back against the hull.
