My vision of the perfect world cruiser for us, guided me to extensive modifications of the original vessel, hull #2/1978. Whether projects or travels, our posts will include plenty of photographs.Ron Sheridanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16682469400110970660noreply@blogger.comBlogger200125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1875332452841616680.post-86283072340085080432019-05-14T18:52:00.002-04:002020-04-14T18:37:51.674-04:00Memories....some things were just, so good. Yes, the quarterly magazine <u><span style="color: #990000;">Cruising Outpost</span><b><i><span style="color: #990000;"> </span></i></b></u>by Bob Bitchin (you remember him from <b>Latitudes and Attitudes </b>magazine) placed <b><span style="color: #38761d;">Memory Rose</span></b> as their 'Featured Boat' Spring 2015 edition.<br />
<br />
The magazine comes out quarterly, so <b><span style="color: #38761d;">Memory Rose</span></b> is 1 of only 4 boats who will get that prize this year! Quite an honor! Thanks Bob!!<br />

I had used Pettit's Trinidad, hard bottom paint before with good results too, but felt the softer ablative paints to be easier to sand off when hauling out and replacing.<br />
Twice, I used a different brand....some European 'ship paint' I was able to buy in Panama did not work well and the same negative results came from SeaHawks top ablative paint/with biocide.<br />
<br />
I just finished sanding off virtually all of the SeaHawk paint and much of the ship anti fouling paint to get a solid base to apply a new product from Pettit. Hydrocoat is Pettit's top of the line, water based anti fouling paint and it includes a biocide. Not cheap at $245/gallon. I applied a SeaHawk primer 1277 first on the entire bottom, then 5 gallons of the green Hydrocoat.<br />

I continue to be asked to explain the <i><b>Ulu Sail Project</b></i> so here goes...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyqZ88XluYAet2463VZvoNvcMSNn_O1_MxV3gyCO-gqLXx8xAnoY1n1yOxBnfYf50-Ah4x6f7u3JvDwKBvhwa3ymf6VxyxifW-B4Msg3zlg4Q5QZy8Zv40B5Hv2Dbcp5mTHWUZ99jIhik/s1600/P1050014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyqZ88XluYAet2463VZvoNvcMSNn_O1_MxV3gyCO-gqLXx8xAnoY1n1yOxBnfYf50-Ah4x6f7u3JvDwKBvhwa3ymf6VxyxifW-B4Msg3zlg4Q5QZy8Zv40B5Hv2Dbcp5mTHWUZ99jIhik/s1600/P1050014.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6;">The sails of the Kuna Indians of Panama were mostly made of scraps they accumulate from old cruising sails given to them by cruisers, or even bed sheets, political posters, or any such old fabric. Anything that can catch the wind.</span><br />
<br />
From the beginning, I always took items to give away along my path, to those I found with needs. Usually, it was toys or something simple for children. Clothing or simple fishing gear was also in stock for 'give away's'. Generosity is not uncommon in the cruising community. Some cruisers devote much of their time while cruising and while at home, to do good as they move across earths surface. I have found cruisers delivering medical supplies, books and educational material or the gift of their personal time and skills. The close contact cruising affords offers unique opportunities.<br />
My 'cruising' has ended, but the connection to some of those we met, has not.<br />

The Ulu Sail Project has now made over 300 sails for the dug out canoes of the Kuna Indians, 2/3's of which have so far been delivered.<br />
They are traded for a couple of molas, a hand sewn ornamental part of a garment worn by the women in their daily clothing. It's an item they commonly used to sell, but this offers them a chance for barter. Barter, allows them to keep their hard earned cash and still get what they need.<br />

The "next" delivery of sails to their Guna Yala region of Panama will be in March or April 2015. <br />

Packed like sardines, the vessels were all in prime condition for showing. Memory Rose was no exception. Every detail was attended to and she definitely drew attention. Most of the show was comprised of power vessels and a smaller section of new sailboats. Memory Rose was the only example of a 'ready to go world cruiser'. Lines were continuous to board here and all were astonished when the departed. Brokers also came in numbers to view her.<br />

Returning home from the show, I took a leisurely route down through the Tampa Ship Channel, under the Skyway Bridge, down to my old anchoring spot at the SE corner of Egmont Key, then went out into the Gulf of Mexico and later on, back into Pass-a-Grille Channel heading for my dock.<br />

My machinist said he could make anything I could draw, so the next morning, I brought him my sketch of a dolphin with back arched upwards. He smiled and added 2 of them to each side of my Dolphin Striker as a design element which also captures the side of the 1/2" 1x19 wire used for the bobstay.<br />

The upper end of the striker in my mind, needed to be able to take minor movement. I had seen too many fixed upper ends, that appeared to me to invite failure from fatigue caused by varying side loads.<br />

Mea Culpa! ;)<br />
<br />
One such mod, was a long term <u><i>transition</i></u>. It took the original designed area into an efficient helm; including the nearby space.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEispSUTxQCGUM42uApFxbE0RLgbEtec5WGnH3sZS2mKk-Wn_9E77oMx4y7pVfNy1oN3zx2kly0TtEO57Lmum5qxRAG1ESu9oxXihSDzAqoQUC1fn7qeNMLVHCrZhL5qU79j0puU0f6e4ts/s1600/4-Forward+Helm%252C+reinforced+and+insulated+Pilot+House+with+blinds..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEispSUTxQCGUM42uApFxbE0RLgbEtec5WGnH3sZS2mKk-Wn_9E77oMx4y7pVfNy1oN3zx2kly0TtEO57Lmum5qxRAG1ESu9oxXihSDzAqoQUC1fn7qeNMLVHCrZhL5qU79j0puU0f6e4ts/s640/4-Forward+Helm%252C+reinforced+and+insulated+Pilot+House+with+blinds..JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
In that interior 'helm area' other mods were accomplished.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv9AlLRUOt-TxnQfPzD8F4VTkgSn0OkrImmXye2-9wRiDntWSr-5zukZ38Q2hQwo4WY2tdSEJMvT4N9pi_8nK7fZGGFLt0nixUuCucp2eEe1agVyMzqwWwDBwzb76AvabNWCfObo_SueU/s1600/3-Forward+Helm%252C+Edson+teak+and+stainless+wheel.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv9AlLRUOt-TxnQfPzD8F4VTkgSn0OkrImmXye2-9wRiDntWSr-5zukZ38Q2hQwo4WY2tdSEJMvT4N9pi_8nK7fZGGFLt0nixUuCucp2eEe1agVyMzqwWwDBwzb76AvabNWCfObo_SueU/s640/3-Forward+Helm%252C+Edson+teak+and+stainless+wheel.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
Much or most of the original wiring and certainly the Instrumentation...was upgraded and simplified.<br />
<br />
An Edson Teak and Stainless Steel ships wheel was added to modernize the interior and add leverage.<br />
<br />
Multiple (3) station, Ratheon radar and instrumentation was installed so this Pilothouse Station was fully functional.<br />
<br />
<b>But then</b>, <span style="color: #cc0000;">ALL navigational equipment was UPDATED</span> to the newest Ratheon equipment in the Forward, Nav Station and Cockpit. ALL 3 stations have <u>complete</u> access to data !<br />
<br />
Below is the Forward helm <b>today</b>.<br />
<br />

Cool huh? About $28,000 was spent on the boat in upgrades since last listing but all worth it!<br />
<br />
Double 1/2" thick scratch resistant windows were installed (yup! total 1") and blinds installed inside for privacy at night at a marina. (Note: the outer windows are heavy tinted grey that are like the best sunglasses...No one, can see in! just out!....as you can see.)<br />

I said I would, but never found my original drawing having packed up most saved material before we went cruising. However!! I have found it.<br />
<br />
I'm not sure if anyone wants to go to the expense and effort required to make this modification to their CSY or even another boat, but if you do, here is a top and side view of what we built in 316 stainless steel.<br />
<br />
The drawing was large, 1" = 1'<br />
<br />
It was designed to be removeable, attaching to the original Anchor Platform and to 2 separate 4" x 8" mounting plates on the hull at the aft end of the tubes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrejem2gXZ9S9jOlyBtyA3tBErckkbEwKgIKltUCIOjJiGaxUXBQfIxPwVDyS_CoIYnlImGxlanWti1rLUaO6NGULLU3tlCCzrttF2trcXsFCS4XzfVyYKcTGce5_RMjztyxhyqI9TJp1/s1600/001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrrejem2gXZ9S9jOlyBtyA3tBErckkbEwKgIKltUCIOjJiGaxUXBQfIxPwVDyS_CoIYnlImGxlanWti1rLUaO6NGULLU3tlCCzrttF2trcXsFCS4XzfVyYKcTGce5_RMjztyxhyqI9TJp1/s640/001.jpg" height="464" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7GHfwNvIpTl_LMa6HJr6_KzhTLtTwL87Lf2DpafOBZG78dcLVnhkk9FhT5wkyZGzXk2utfL8MYXi1Fh_wBAV7Td1JuIx3t-iRidL9ry-Qw6EUmE6ZyNcd89ENHyrWgAUT1luFrv78yakO/s1600/002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7GHfwNvIpTl_LMa6HJr6_KzhTLtTwL87Lf2DpafOBZG78dcLVnhkk9FhT5wkyZGzXk2utfL8MYXi1Fh_wBAV7Td1JuIx3t-iRidL9ry-Qw6EUmE6ZyNcd89ENHyrWgAUT1luFrv78yakO/s640/002.jpg" height="464" width="640" /></a></div>
You can print them out, align them and tape them together to have a drawing equal to the original.<br />
<br />
Note, this was a time consuming project and quite costly.<br />
$11,700 Bow Sprit and pulpit by Doug Embree<br />
$1,000 for mods to self-deploying anchor system incorporated in original design.<br />
$400 for custom 'cutwater fitting' to attach Bobstay<br />
$1,000 for Bobstay components including spectacular Dolphin Striker done by Rick Heim of Gulfport Industrial Machine<br />
Add to that:<br />
An NC42 Profurl roller furling for new Genoa<br />
$2500<br />
And the sail by "Mack Sails"<br />
$3,000<br />
New leads for genoa sheets, and then the additional costs for adding a Staysail and all it's blocks leads sail, sheets, custom stainless conponents etc. adding another 6-7 grand. <br />
<br />
<u>Easily</u> a $20,000 project and this is in 1999-2001 dollars.<br />

That idea quickly blossomed to making 10
sails for their village. Then I just decided to put x amount of $ into the project. The
end result grew to .... 30 main sails and 8 jibs, delivered a few months
after manufacture.You see, the sails common in this island nation were normally made from scraps of materials... some old sail cloth sailors had donated, bed sheets, political posters, fabric from almost anything that could 'catch the wind'. The sails usually could catch wind, but did not and could not perform well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgijFYlj5Zhen_hNZg0JiiOyIfTsHNPRWN-dY5iaOLDOn3BDH8ZZWnZHrsePLcHbC5ZyP-Tu-imvkm4NU867jidQ9o74Ii9hB1xGA5awBspw8MMqzlGAaMX-LoaIBecDXunlT_Bl91GUco/s1600/P1050038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgijFYlj5Zhen_hNZg0JiiOyIfTsHNPRWN-dY5iaOLDOn3BDH8ZZWnZHrsePLcHbC5ZyP-Tu-imvkm4NU867jidQ9o74Ii9hB1xGA5awBspw8MMqzlGAaMX-LoaIBecDXunlT_Bl91GUco/s1600/P1050038.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Bed sheets and political posters and a lot of paddling.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXbjobnjObqeNQUqamqo5q_J4WTrl895BIT15UVmTSATNp9dPVc7ITgIgHdHuVh_07CoadOt5f9cEoL4gwT0rwbSpEZp0PdP_gu72nBvtmcIvQUQo47ph5UU8xfZwrcYrXIaMuCgeSlnE/s1600/P1050090.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXbjobnjObqeNQUqamqo5q_J4WTrl895BIT15UVmTSATNp9dPVc7ITgIgHdHuVh_07CoadOt5f9cEoL4gwT0rwbSpEZp0PdP_gu72nBvtmcIvQUQo47ph5UU8xfZwrcYrXIaMuCgeSlnE/s1600/P1050090.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Sadly, sails like this are commonly used for their only form of transportation.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJK6rpWzYWnnjGY63Pk8Vk5B2YVZV1WnhrsxNAwz5g2icBaeJWADuIZ63rUkMy6JNZ4PKwJ5XPmvdgBU8p3kDznfmbEY0R5Ei_u7k9pIDJr0uGJCLfMCicO1SJY6MrzoHDOWhA2r_Yb6U/s1600/P1050014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJK6rpWzYWnnjGY63Pk8Vk5B2YVZV1WnhrsxNAwz5g2icBaeJWADuIZ63rUkMy6JNZ4PKwJ5XPmvdgBU8p3kDznfmbEY0R5Ei_u7k9pIDJr0uGJCLfMCicO1SJY6MrzoHDOWhA2r_Yb6U/s1600/P1050014.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
So now you see there was a need for real sails, made from new sailcloth, that could power these crafts upwind as well as downwind or in any direction with confidence, speed and some added safety.<br />
<br />
The project started simply, as I sat on the floor of a
friends garage, but it got up to speed quickly with a table, my Sailrite

<br />
One
of the men, Justino Galindo Martinez called me 4 or 5 times in the
months following my first delivery and asked if I was coming back with
more sails.. More Sails??<br />
A few sentences later, I understood
there was a demand for new sails sized to fit their ulus. I gave it
some thought, then proceeded to prep for another stint at sail making.<br />
<br />
The
result was an order for 1100 yards of sail cloth and all the peripheral
materials and equipment necessary to produce them, including a location.<br />
I rented a building, set it up with electric, lighting and tables then began cutting material..<br />

<br />
Long story made short.. more sails have been made than I can as yet deliver or distribute..<br />
<br />
This is where the story takes an interesting and inspiring turn.<br />
<br />
This past fall, several cruisers who had noticed the new sails on the horizon, began to contact me, asking questions and lending verbal
support to the Ulu Sail Project. Then one couple, Frank and Gretchen
really got behind the idea and began to promote it with emails, radio contact and personally within the sailing
community of the San Blas Islands, and even got word over to a gent in
Germany who did some promotion there. Now, they have a number of these Ulu Sails aboard and are offering them to the cruisers who wish to assist in this project in a direct way, by purchase.<br />

<span style="color: magenta;"> <span style="background-color: yellow;">Justino of Isla Gerti, with 2 new sails.</span></span><br />
Friends of
Frank and Gretchen, Tom and Julie of sailing vessel Gris-Gris, happened
to be in the U.S. at the time but soon heading to the San Blas, offered
to take a few sails south with them for distribution.. A small snowball
effect, but things were building. The sails arrived a month later in
the San Blas and with the word out, some cruisers began to purchase a
sail or two, at cost ...to later on, be given away or bartered for molas
of their choice.<br />

I had nightmares on other boats and decided not to have them anymore.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
First, I removed absolutely everything from the engine compartment, except the engine! Yup, nice and clean and easy to work on.<br />
<br />
Pumps, wires, hoses, filters, yada, yada, yada....just removed!<br />
<br />
Each item of importance was then moved 'somewhere' I could just sit if necessary in a nasty sea state and just relax and work on it. NO, I would no longer accept working in a hot engine compartment when the need arises. I opted to put everything necessary in a comfortable cool place.<br />
<br />
Engine filters bolted to the side of the engine were removed and replaced with a Racor 500 filtering system with a 2 micron filter!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhVL-yO2S9ia3FhuPM9tSWq5MOFnrXntljnMeLRBzZ2Ejs4oe9XrAkG9zH4bCulEla2lHLblLkLscyYXJRjv_j7yMxrBijClc7nR5Pbm7UnNRI0mzWa-teaneenQbK48gi9QyFpZbGo-I/s1600/P1000142.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhVL-yO2S9ia3FhuPM9tSWq5MOFnrXntljnMeLRBzZ2Ejs4oe9XrAkG9zH4bCulEla2lHLblLkLscyYXJRjv_j7yMxrBijClc7nR5Pbm7UnNRI0mzWa-teaneenQbK48gi9QyFpZbGo-I/s640/P1000142.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
This was installed in the Aft head, where I could sit on the floor comfortably, if necessary to change the filter......................NOT in a hot cramped engine room!<br />
<br />
Before that, I installed a DOUBLE Racor 500 filtering system. One with a 2 micron filter and another with either a 10 or 30 micron filter as immediate backup if the 2 micron got clogged.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Behind the Port side settee, in the Pilothouse, was the original location for wet cell batteries. They were very difficult to get to, no less top off with water when needed. Gel Cells were the answer and putting them down below their prior location, opened up the original battery space for usable storage and use space below for the new batteries.<br />

The entire area was finished with white gel coat.<br />
<br />
Lexan covers were installed to prohibit the possibility of anything getting into the battery area. Battery wiring is all very heavy marine grade 0000 (4/0).<br />

How's it look?Ron Sheridanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16682469400110970660noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1875332452841616680.post-27722457257509864182013-10-22T18:31:00.000-04:002013-10-22T18:31:39.172-04:00Davits, Solar Panels, Monitor Windvane, Swim/Dive platform and ladderLucky enough to have found a master machinist/fabricator years ago, I began designing custom parts for Memory Rose. Everything was built of 316 L stainless steel.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha-wgzs0cs2w8tVELqt8RAW24z1jSFnJSvh48Jc_-sabJ_ZUcC5uY6GnoTmvADIGPF1RP-BEodO12Trqy0Fx9DK_W6iPTNKs5KtzRU6OxG_letQx9sV13qfKexSY10jUE2XoBM780U_tg/s1600/1-Mods+to+stern+hardware.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="370" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha-wgzs0cs2w8tVELqt8RAW24z1jSFnJSvh48Jc_-sabJ_ZUcC5uY6GnoTmvADIGPF1RP-BEodO12Trqy0Fx9DK_W6iPTNKs5KtzRU6OxG_letQx9sV13qfKexSY10jUE2XoBM780U_tg/s400/1-Mods+to+stern+hardware.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
First came a swim/dive platform and ladder to egress the water. Heavy wall tubing with a starboard surface and grab rail aft and underneath.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhphLyMe-Ej5Q-v5zwJDptoGEEVgXYOewyNhjQltGnz-EU6yPxO0HpgHG-0GbVainIIhoceGYROuAaF2asee4XpMHjziLhMm71Nz6bCbn4lfMLa7irmYA4Gld1tC200bZws-KbTAeOt4x0/s1600/1-P1010726.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhphLyMe-Ej5Q-v5zwJDptoGEEVgXYOewyNhjQltGnz-EU6yPxO0HpgHG-0GbVainIIhoceGYROuAaF2asee4XpMHjziLhMm71Nz6bCbn4lfMLa7irmYA4Gld1tC200bZws-KbTAeOt4x0/s640/1-P1010726.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
The transom underwent a process of evolution, beginning with special davits. I needed davits that could not be found on the open market, because all standard davits had to attach to the custom 30" tall push-pit around the aft end of the cockpit, which would prohibit me from using the sheeting system for the Mizzen sail.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzCbQgiLrGJRRt0aB_gByfCHnjZJlRwRGpOXEw7-x0hyphenhyphenmhIX9dAupfoS8w7jErTNMB5CtQPJ4lbpXJwY1x06BYyR08H0bjNZ5FeokoqJYVNLhkk2vtwe1tmUzQqs9D0q-Tl0r-ihr12Yo/s1600/5-P1030081.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzCbQgiLrGJRRt0aB_gByfCHnjZJlRwRGpOXEw7-x0hyphenhyphenmhIX9dAupfoS8w7jErTNMB5CtQPJ4lbpXJwY1x06BYyR08H0bjNZ5FeokoqJYVNLhkk2vtwe1tmUzQqs9D0q-Tl0r-ihr12Yo/s640/5-P1030081.JPG" width="474" /></a></div>
I needed 'clearance' for those sheeting lines. I finally figured out a design that allowed total clearance for the mizzen sheeting system as well as clearance for the late model 316 stainless steel Monitor wind vane I was going to install.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhidrDBbg89l6T_cspe85ww5S7K0r0iS-QGDWaZfIRnwoLKQg-AGeR9kvWLwBGB4zlDx_IRx3KGCe_lEc3C6d-pKjp1ivV1Yrtka64-eQUnwXD25VbDCPgpVtZ33Y0WBZXpM4oEotLVWU4/s1600/3-P1030079.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhidrDBbg89l6T_cspe85ww5S7K0r0iS-QGDWaZfIRnwoLKQg-AGeR9kvWLwBGB4zlDx_IRx3KGCe_lEc3C6d-pKjp1ivV1Yrtka64-eQUnwXD25VbDCPgpVtZ33Y0WBZXpM4oEotLVWU4/s640/3-P1030079.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Another 'need' was the ability to design into this, a 3 panel array of high end 85 watt solar panels that could be rotated to follow the sun.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA5IMRQVtw0opUh9EgnW4tOJT3OPNckjOeNdi8axXGQSf0TSuHQ711k2KKayoyC6Hj5GCFn5gsnXVWDjOYhfOv1SH4S9957kqKqJlC1T3b0Glaw365FsPngwEuMmaC_9ANIjL25Z1VYq4/s1600/7-Adjustable+Solar+Aray+on+Davits-now+facing+aft..JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhA5IMRQVtw0opUh9EgnW4tOJT3OPNckjOeNdi8axXGQSf0TSuHQ711k2KKayoyC6Hj5GCFn5gsnXVWDjOYhfOv1SH4S9957kqKqJlC1T3b0Glaw365FsPngwEuMmaC_9ANIjL25Z1VYq4/s640/7-Adjustable+Solar+Aray+on+Davits-now+facing+aft..JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
The ability to rotate the solar panels as the day progressed, produced 10-25% more output by aligning these panels to get direct sunlight.<br />
<br />
We lived <i><u>most comfortably</u></i> off of Solar and filtered Rain Water for <b>all </b>of our cruising.<br />

I spent a ton of money to produce the best boat my brain could imagine for a couple or solo sailor to cruise on.<br />
At first used Doug Embree, here in St. Petersburg, Fl. , as the initial fabricato for exceptional stainless steel components. However, things took too long to produce and far too costly, so I moved on to another local guy here that was quick, reasonably priced and ...well, what could a guy like me ask for that was more than that, but I will add, Rick was a total pleasure to work with. He is a wonderful guy? <br />
Rick was exceptional. Here are some photos of his work for me and Memory Rose.<br />

Mast slides over top of aluminum....all this with an 1/8th inch Delrin sheet between them to eliminate galvanic action degrading the Mizzen base. A work of art that could be on someone's mantle piece.<br />

Top of Sampson Post:<br />
IF, the rare occasion occurs, that one could consider using a 2nd anchor on this boat(Primary anchor is a huge 110 lb. Bruce). ....the Sampson post a few feet back from the bow, offers a "Turning Cap" added on top, that will redirect the 2nd anchors rode to the Windlass Capstan on the Starboard deck. One Windlass/ capstan and gypsy yet it is designed to handle 2 rodes, line or chain.<br />
